Hi SEC advisory friends,

I hope that this email finds you well! I just wanted to share two updates and a call for feedback.

Update 1: that I’m planning our first SEC update-a-thon this Friday. This will be a few hours long, as a dedicated space to focus on content. I’ve taken down your comments from the past few months and will be using them as a reference point for things we need to improve on or change. Note that it doesn’t include design changes this round.

How it’ll be structured: myself and five of my colleagues will be going through all the old SEC content and identifying areas that need to be updated.

We most likely will be looking at some articles of Security Education 101 and asking ourselves if:
1) it continues to be culturally sensitive
2) if any of our pedagogical advice is outdated
3) if our recommendations for new trainers based in the US have changed
4) if any of the tools we mention are outdated examples

We then will be looking more closely at our Lesson Topics section and the Teaching Materials section for:
1) technical inaccuracies, particularly as we mention specific tools (e.g. Signal, Signal Desktop, WhatsApp, password managers that are no longer updated, etc.)
2) better teaching examples if we can think of any

So: if you have any ideas for specific areas we can improve upon that meet the above considerations, please shoot me an email or fill out sec.eff.org/feedback! I’d be grateful for feedback within the next two days.

Update 2: You might be asking yourself: but what about new content?

I’ll be reexamining the backlogged items. My role at EFF is changing a tiny bit, so I’m trying to figure out how to build in time for new content, while maintaining a reasonable schedule for updates.

+ As you know, EFF’s advice toward email security has changed a lot (particularly in this kind of weird period, and we just launched a project on encryption in transit for email yesterday: starttls-everywhere.org). Once the dust settles, I’d like to revisit these materials.
+ The big ideas in security microblog is something we’re still toying with.
+ Some of our lingering lesson plans (e.g. teaching How the Internet Works). We haven’t had many testers of late, so I’m keen to get these in front of folks that are teaching.

In this vein, if you have ideas for needed materials in the space, please let us know! You can always shoot me a message directly, or fill out our feedback form here: sec.eff.org/feedback

Anyway, that’s all! Wishing you all so well,
Soraya

PS I’ll be at HOPE this year for vacation. If others are in NYC around that time, it’d be lovely to see you.
