[Ccpa] Request for support - CA privacy bill (AB 3119) Friday noon PDT

Hi everyone -

This is Maureen from Consumer Reports - I hope you are well! (And apologies
for cross-posting).

I'm reviving the list built for Asm. Wicks's Privacy for All bill (AB 1760,
2019) to invite your support for a new online privacy measure - Wicks's AB
3119.

AB 3119 boils down last year's bill to one key CCPA reform: data
minimization. It will provide an important backstop against overbroad data
use -- an issue that's especially urgent in light of the COVID crisis -- by
limiting the collection, sharing, use, and retention of personal data to
what is reasonably necessary to operate the service requested by the
consumer. And consumers have to provide their permission for any sharing of
their data.

This bill would ensure that consumers' privacy is ensured by default, a
much-needed correction to the CCPA, which provides a much weaker opt-out of
sale (which is difficult to exercise, and a lot of the worst actors aren't
complying anyway).

While it's unlikely that Asm. Chau will agree to hear the bill at Tuesday's
Asm. Privacy hearing (and the bill is not perfect, it needs some leg
counsel clean-up), we need a strong show of support to help keep strong
privacy principles moving forward (perhaps even in another vehicle).

I've attached one sign-on for non-profits and one for for-profits. *Please

deadline a bit in the hopes of getting more sign-ons)
